Quinton and the Dark Riders

Quinton had waited patiently for sunset. Now that nightfall was complete, he slipped out of the forest, crossed the clearing, and passed through the stone wall’s gate. He mounted the hill as noiselessly as possible, and approached the Hermit Shepherd’s house. He crouched low, watching. Through the front window, he saw no light or movement inside. No smoke rose from the chimney.

He stepped closer and found the door unlocked. Inside, he tiptoed across the front room, down the hall, and into the dark chamber where he’d left the Golden Scroll. On the table at the room’s center, he could see the scroll lying there. A definite light still emanated from it, although the ray from the Great Mountains was no longer shining through the upper window.

Quinton stepped up to the table. As he reached to roll the scroll shut, he took special care to guard his hands from the light of the letters. He never again wanted to see that chain on his wrist.

He stuffed the scroll into his shirt and stepped away. Now, surely, he had everything needed to overcome the forces of the Dark Master.

After a stealthy exit from the Hermit Shepherd’s house, Quinton began to trek through the woods for most of the night. Finally he reached the forest’s edge. Gazing into the hills, he could make out the outline of the Keep in the dark distance. All its doors were open, and they showed flickering firelight inside. That wicked foe had set fire to the Keep’s interior! Quinton spoke aloud. “I’ll show you a thing or two, come sunup.”

After resting a few hours, Quinton awoke. Daylight had come, but ashy smoke from the Keep filled the sky.

He wondered where his father might be on this dark morning.

He pulled out the Golden Scroll from beneath his shirt, and clutched it tightly. He was eager to shine it right into the face of the Dark Master—and make him flee like a wretched rat!

His strongest thoughts deepened: I’ll be the land’s hero! I’ll overcome the darkness! I’ve set my mind—and I’ll do it!

Quinton left the cover of the forest trees, but he hadn’t gone far when he saw a band of riders on black horses coming from the Keep. Fear rose within him. He looked down at the Golden Scroll and reminded himself: no enemy could defeat its light. He put the scroll beneath his arm and pressed it to his side—ready to use its overcoming power at the right moment.

When the riders reached him, they surrounded him. There were five of these dark beings, all wearing hoods. From their partially concealed faces, Quinton could see a flicker of evil passion in their eyes. The sight of it seemed to freeze the blood in Quinton’s veins.

One rider pointed to Quinton’s arm and sneered. “What’s that you carry?”

Quinton drew it from beneath his arm, and gave a shout. “Be gone, you servants of darkness!”

He opened the scroll and pointed it toward the riders. They gasped in terror, covering their eyes and reining back their horses.
